Hourly rentals are now available at Pettigrew Lake at Meadowood Park in Tornado. This is a great way for beginners and kids to learn the basics of kayaking.
Welcome to Coal River Kayak & Canoe Rental. We provide rentals for the Coal River Walhonde Water Trail that includes the Big Coal River, Little Coal River and the Coal River. Day trip floats range from 3 miles to 15 miles. We deliver the kayaks and canoes to the launch site and provide transportation to return floaters to their vehicles. A shuttle service is also available for customers with their own watercraft.
Our home base is at the Upper Falls of the scenic Coal River in Tornado, West Virginia at the Upper Falls Meadowwood Park with two floats for the Coal River originating here.
Wildlife is abundant along the river system where you can discover a variety of water birds during your float. Osprey, Great Blue Herons, Green Herons, Kingfishers, Canadian Geese, Wood Ducks and Mallard Ducks are common sightings along the river along with occassional sightings of Bald Eagles are reported. Deer, turkey, beaver and muskrats are often unaware of your presence as you quietly float down the river.
The Little Coal and Big Coal Rivers feature riffles and class I rapids while the Coal River is mostly flat water with the exception of the lower falls which are a class I rapid and riffle section.
